The Roots of Superstition
It all started in the 19th century. As soon as it became possible to take photographs, the wealthy classes developed a tradition of capturing a deceased relative as a keepsake. The deceased was seated at a table, a book or newspaper was put in their hands, and a photo was taken. In the pictures, the deceased resembled a person who had simply fallen asleep.
The tradition continued until the 1960s. Then the belief was born that you can’t photograph a sleeping person, otherwise you can bring death upon him.
