YouTube representatives have made an important statement regarding minors.
They said they had taken on the responsibility of protecting teenagers from videos that push beauty ideals.
Teenagers are more susceptible to forming negative opinions about themselves than adults when they repeatedly see standardized images of beauty in the online content they consume, MIA Rossiya Segodnyaquotes the statement as saying.
It goes on to say that for this reason, the video hosting site is restricting "repeated recommendations of videos related to these topics" worldwide.
The company explained the danger that lurks in content that is safe in limited quantities if viewed repeatedly.
In this case, there is a risk of developing a mental disorder.
This refers to content that concerns:
- physical features and idealization of some forms of beauty over others;
– idealization of the level of physical fitness or a certain weight;
- videos of “non-contact forms of social aggression,” including intimidation.
And for European users, YouTube is launching an option that allows them to use crisis center resources if necessary.
