A rare occurrence in the current European football season: Catalan Barcelona lost.

The team, which won all five opening matches in its national championship, suffered a fiasco on the international stage.

And this happened already in the first meeting within the framework of the renewed Champions League. In the first round, Barça played away against Monaco.

Played with a man down

The Spaniards left the principality on the shield. They scored only one goal and conceded two. Thus, 1:2. This is the first defeat of the "blue garnets" this season.

The Catalans' game did not go well from the very beginning. Already in the 11th minute of the match they were left with one man down - the referee gave a red card to Eric Garcia.

Five minutes later, another misfortune struck the weakened Spaniards as Manes Aklios torpedoed their goal.

But in the 28th minute, thanks to the young, extremely talented footballer Lamin Yamal, the score was evened.

With that, the teams went into the break – 1:1. However, in the second half, the Monegasques again took the lead – in the 71st minute, George Ilenihena scored.

As it turned out, the latter set the final score in the match – 2:1.

Other matches

Another top match on September 19 saw the Italian Atalanta and English Arsenal play off. The match ended in a 0:0 draw.

And the phenomenal German Bayer continues to “kill” its rivals at the international level.

Footballers from Leverkusen visited Feyenoord (Rotterdam, Netherlands). The visit turned out to be quite good – they scored four unanswered goals against the hosts.

Among other results of yesterday's Champions League game day, we note the home defeat of Serbian Red Star to Portuguese Benfica (1:2).

Atletico Madrid beat German Leipzig (2:1) on their home field, while French Brest defeated Austrian Sturm (2:1).
