The necessity of the profession for society is clear: the modern, closely interacting world within the framework of international relations simply cannot do without translations.
Economic, political and diplomatic relations, business, trade between countries – a translator is needed.
Interaction between industrial, agricultural, IT companies, contacts in the areas of culture, sports, science – a translator is needed everywhere.
Man is better than machine
Machines and online translation services will not help you understand a foreigner in all cases.
They carry out the process purely formally and, therefore, do not take into account various shades of meaning, the ambiguity of words, context, etc.
Hence the main disadvantage of such translators is the high probability of distortion of what is said or written.
This means that a person as a translator is simply irreplaceable.
But on condition that he is a qualified professional, not only with an excellent knowledge of languages, in which he can communicate freely, but also understanding the specifics of the activity in which he is involved.
By the way, today they value not only those who speak English, but they also actively hire those who are “on first name terms” with Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Arabic, French, German, Italian and other languages.
Specifics of work
One of the features is that specialists can work both in the office and remotely, at home.
Another specificity is that the work is often associated with numerous trips and business trips.
Hence, the work schedule can be either permanent or flexible, and the working day can be either standardized or irregular.
Another feature: employees can be associated only with written or oral translation, or they can be involved in simultaneous or combined translation.
Often, interpreters appear in front of television cameras in front of many people, for example, at press conferences, major events, interviews, etc.
Tasks
It is also important where exactly the translator works. The schedule, the level of stress and workload, and the level of responsibility depend on this.
For example, work in the diplomatic and political spheres differs from work in banking, just as work in law differs from business, and the scientific sphere differs from the sports, entertainment or cultural industries.
In addition, completely different tasks are solved during written translations (books, articles, documents, etc.).
Therefore, a translator must, among other things, understand the specifics of the field he represents (be a little bit of a politician or diplomat, businessman or lawyer, athlete or journalist, doctor or farmer).
Let us add that among interpreters, a distinction is made between simultaneous interpreters (they translate in real time) and non-simultaneous interpreters (working mainly on phrases, for example, as a personal assistant to the head of a company).
All translators – oral and written – are separately responsible for the quality, accuracy and efficiency of the translation.
How much do they earn?
In Belarus today, translators can earn from 650 to 7,800 rubles.
At least, these are the figures that appear in employers’ vacancies posted on the official website of the state employment service.
For example, the company for import and export of fresh and frozen products “Haihua” (Minsk) offers a translator from 650 to 700 rubles.
OOO Gochuzhn (Minsk), the Metiz enterprise (Mogilev), and the Lebanon-tour company (Grodno) are ready to pay exactly 700 rubles.
But more often today, translators are promised salaries from 1,000 to 1,400 rubles.
Thus, the trade and construction company "MSS15" (Lyuban district, Minsk region) will provide a specialist with from 1,000 to 1,200 rubles.
Exactly 1,200 rubles were promised to the translator by the company CITIC International Cooperation Co., Ltd (also Lyuban district).
And the Minsk-based organization “Bona Cars” is calling for a specialist for a salary of 1,300 to 1,400 rubles.
The highest salary as of the end of November was from 7,500 to 7,800.
A translator can earn this kind of money if he or she is successfully employed by the Minsk company “Bayelosy Office of the Canton Center for International Exchange and Cooperation”.
The applicant for the position is additionally required to have a higher education and a perfect command of English and Chinese.
