A new threat in the modern world is digital identity theft.

The State Control Committee of Belarus explained how to protect yourself from this.

How to protect yourself on social networks

A digital identity is a collection of all personal data that a person leaves publicly available on the Internet: full name, telephone number, place of residence and work, photo, card number, social network addresses and passwords, etc.

Based on this data, criminals can create a new account.

Such accounts are used to send spam, extort money, insult, and commit other illegal actions on the Internet.

Attackers can also write messages on your behalf to your family and friends.

To protect yourself on social media, do not include more personal information in your profile than necessary.

Check your privacy and confidentiality settings, set a strong password (at least 12 characters with numbers, symbols, uppercase and lowercase letters), enable two-factor authentication and do not click on suspicious links.
