On the morning of December 3, employees of the American Kitt Peak Observatory discovered an asteroid, which, according to their calculations, was rapidly approaching the Earth.
It was later revealed that the space body was supposed to crash somewhere in the vast expanses of Russia, or more precisely, in Yakutia. The object was supposed to enter the Earth's atmosphere at 19:17 Moscow time.
How this rare event, which poses some threat to earthlings, happened, is reported by MIA " Russia Today " with reference to the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the republic.
At the appointed time, asteroid COWEPC5 did indeed approach the Earth's atmosphere.
Then he was seen in the sky over Yakutia, but that was the end of the spectacle.
The object passed through the atmosphere and its subsequent fate has not been reported.
The message states that due to the approach of the asteroid, “the safety of the population’s life is not compromised.”
Nevertheless, all forces and means were immediately put on alert.
It was previously reported that the potentially dangerous asteroid COWEPC5, ranging in size from 0.5 to 2 meters, was expected to enter the Earth's atmosphere over Siberia west of the settlement of Olekminsk at approximately 19:17 Moscow time.
