Russians have encountered fraud when importing cars from Kazakhstan. There are reports of vehicles being confiscated when trying to register them with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, despite the fact that the cars were honestly purchased in Russia.
More than 800 people fell victim to the large-scale scam.
Russians have encountered a large-scale scam in the delivery of cars using the “Kazakhstani scheme”, reports Gazeta.ru .
During any visit to the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, cars are confiscated from owners, despite the fact that they were honestly purchased on Russian territory.
As usually happens in such cases, no one suspected the sellers were scamming.
Kazakhstan scam
Experts specify that during 2023, the organizers of the scheme offered citizens of Kazakhstan to take out a loan for cars.
For this, buyers were promised a reward of almost 400 thousand rubles (2 million tenge) and the opportunity to buy the vehicles in the future at a low price.
It was claimed that the cars were allegedly being purchased for taxi companies and car rentals.
The fraudsters promised to pay off the loan payments for the borrowers, and after the repayment, the car was supposed to be re-registered to a legal entity or it could be bought out at a discounted price.
Verbal agreements with citizens of Kazakhstan were not fulfilled, and in February 2024, the fraudsters stopped paying their debts.
All the cars were immediately exported to Russia, and the sales contracts from the Kazakhstani owners were simply forged.
In Russia, vehicles were officially sold through showrooms as cars from Kazakhstan imported through parallel import.
What's the bottom line?
In February 2024, citizens of Kazakhstan began filing reports to the police en masse, trying to get their cars back.
Buyers in Russia are forced to seek recognition as bona fide buyers or a refund from car dealerships.
We are talking about Hyundai cars (Elantra, Creta, Sonata, Tucson), as well as Toyota Camry.
