Experts from the Pushkin State Institute conducted a study on the global prevalence of the Russian language.
As a result of the analysis, it was found that the Russian language is the seventh most popular language in the world.
When determining the place of the Russian language in the world ranking, various factors were taken into account, such as the number of native or foreign speakers of the language, the geography of its distribution by country, and other aspects.
The researchers also determined the number of international organizations where Russian is recognized as an official language.
From this point of view, the Russian language ranks fourth.
The top three languages for this parameter included English, French and Spanish.
In terms of the number of periodicals, the Russian language took seventh place.
If we take into account the popularity of the language on the Internet, it ranks sixth.
Finally, in the Global Competitiveness Index, the Russian language is in fifth place.
If we look at the Ethnologue reference book, dated 2023, we will learn that Russian, with 255 million native speakers, is in ninth place.
The "gold" in this nomination belongs to English, which is not surprising, since almost 1.5 billion people speak it.
The next positions are occupied by Chinese (1.14 billion) and Hindi (609 million).
In addition, languages that have overtaken Russian include Spanish, French, Arabic, Bengali and Portuguese.
