In the mid-19th century, a brick viaduct was built in Germany, which since then and to this day has held the “title” of the largest bridge in the world.
The Gelchtalbrücke (as the structure was named), built in 1846-1851, will most likely retain the title of record holder, since in our time hardly anyone would dare to build a brick bridge.
The bridge is 78 meters high and 574 meters long. The width of the bridge at the base is 23 meters.
The Gelchtalbrücke is a four-story building with arches of varying widths.
The bridge crosses the valley of the river Geltsch on the highway connecting Leipzig and Nuremberg.
In addition to its impressive size, this viaduct is also known for being the site of several suicides.
The 2002 film The Devil's Game attracted even more suicidal people to the site.
Since that year, the bridge has been under heavy Federal Police protection and is closed to pedestrians. However, in good weather, you can appreciate its grandeur and beauty by taking to the skies in a hot air balloon.
Earlier we talked about the very first interior designer in the world.
