Everyone knows that the chances of surviving a plane or other aircraft crash are negligible.
Cases where someone survived a plane crash are rare and almost unique. But this does not mean that an airplane is the most dangerous form of transport.
After analyzing data on human fatalities in the first decade of the 21st century, American scientists from Northwestern University found out which type of transport is the most dangerous.
The data were based on deaths from 2001 to 2009.
The top cause of deaths was motor transport. The unit of calculation here is every billion passenger miles, which accounts for 7.28 deaths.
You can calculate a passenger mile by multiplying the number of passengers by the distance traveled.
But motorcyclists are at far greater risk.
The fatality rate here is simply off the charts – 213 deaths per billion passenger miles.
This means that riding a motorcycle is almost 30 times more dangerous than riding a car.
At the same time, rail transport accounts for 0.43 cases of death, the subway even less, and air travel turned out to be the safest.
