Several decades ago, the tallest structure in the world was located... in the Polish village of Konstantynow.
We are talking about a radio mast, the height of which was 646 meters.
The structure was called the Warsaw Radio Mast.
The structure lost its status as the tallest in the world in 1991, but not because a taller structure was built that year.
History of the Warsaw Radio Mast
Construction of the radio mast began in 1970. Operation of the facility began in the summer of 1974.
The structure was built for long-wave radio broadcasting throughout the Polish territory, as well as to the European continent.
The radio mast did not even stand for 20 years. In the summer of 1991, it collapsed. This happened during repair work.
Fortunately, no one was killed or injured during the incident.
Later, there were plans to restore the Warsaw radio mast, but in the end this idea was abandoned.
However, if the building were still standing, it would not have the status of the tallest on Earth. After all, in 2010, the 828-meter Burj Khalifa skyscraper was built in the UAE.
