Many residents of post-Soviet countries are convinced that the presence of a metro in a city indicates that the settlement is very large and most likely has the status of a “millionaire”.
However, there are several relatively small cities in the world that have a metro.
Examples include the French cities of Lille and Rennes (less than 250 thousand inhabitants).
There is also a metro in Newcastle, UK (280 thousand residents).
But the real record holder in this regard is the Swiss city of Lausanne.
Lausanne Metro
It was put into operation in the early nineties of the last century.
The Lausanne metro consists of two lines and includes 28 stations.
The following fact is interesting: only 138 thousand people live in the city.
In other words, Lausanne can hardly be called a populated area. And yet, there is a metro here.
It is also worth emphasizing that Lausanne's metro is still the only one in Switzerland. Zurich and Geneva do not have a metro.
