At the end of August 2020, the Guinness Book of Records updated the record for the oldest married couple in the world.
Then, the publication's pages featured a mention of the spouses Julio Mora Tapia and Valdramina Quinteros.
At that time, Senor Tapia had already reached the venerable age of 111 years, while his wife Vildramina was a little “behind” her husband – she was only 105 years old.
The couple got married on February 7, 1941.
It is noteworthy that they hid the celebration from their parents and, accordingly, were left without the blessing of their families.
At the time of the wedding, the groom was almost 31 and the bride was 26.
They lived together for 79 years, but they got into the Guinness Book of Records not only because of this, because there are longer marriages in the world.
The Guinness commission's choice fell on the couple with the greatest combined age. Thus, the Tapia spouses have accumulated 217 years of life between them.
Both record holders are retired teachers from the city of Quito, which is located in Ecuador.
Despite their advanced age, they are mentally alert and physically fit, says their daughter Cecilia, likely the result of a lifetime of mental activity.
In total, the couple has four children, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Julio and Wildramina have surpassed the record of US couple John and Charlotte Henderson, whose combined age is 212.
