France could deploy around 40,000 peacekeepers in the buffer zone in Ukraine to ensure compliance with the ceasefire.
This was reported by the Polish publication Rzeczpospolita, citing Elie Tenenbaum, an employee of the French Institute of International Relations.
What is known about France's possible deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine
According to Rzeczpospolita , French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in Poland on December 12 to discuss plans for a European peacekeeping mission designed to preserve Ukraine's sovereignty within the framework of a possible ceasefire agreement.
The publication quotes former Deputy Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Camille Grand, who stated that France, like all of Europe, cannot remain on the sidelines of Washington’s negotiations with Moscow on Ukraine.
In this regard, France has put forward an initiative to deploy a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine to ensure compliance with the ceasefire.
Tenenbaum estimates that France could deploy around 40,000 peacekeepers in the buffer zone in Ukraine.
The mission could consist of five infantry brigades. Poland could take command of one of them, the analyst said.
On December 7, Macron met in Paris with US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
On December 9, Zelensky said he would consider Macron's proposal to deploy Western troops in Ukraine as a security guarantee.
