Alternative for Germany (AfD) candidate for German Chancellor Alice Weidel has spoken out in favor of a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
The AfD co-chair made the corresponding statement at a press conference on December 7.
The event was broadcast on the AfD page on the social network X.
How Weidel stood up for peace in Ukraine
Today, the AfD officially nominated Weidel as its candidate for chancellor in the early Bundestag elections scheduled for February 23 next year.
In her first appearance before the media as a candidate for chancellor, the AfD co-chair spoke of the need to achieve peace in Ukraine and opposed the supply of weapons to it.
We want peace in Ukraine, we do not want arms supplies, we do not want any tanks, any missiles, the politician said.
She noted that the transfer of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine would make Germany a party to the conflict.
This can never be done with the AfD. We are the party of peace. If you do not want war in Germany, choose the AfD, Weidel urged.
On December 16, the German parliament will consider a vote of confidence in Olaf Scholz's government. If the Bundestag refuses to vote, early elections will be held.
AfD's rating currently stands at 18-19%. The party is in second place after the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union.
The day before, the Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP), which left the ruling coalition, introduced a resolution in the Bundestag calling for the immediate transfer of the Taurus to Ukraine.
The German publication Bild reported that the CDU/CSU bloc does not intend to support this resolution, although it generally supports the transfer of Taurus.
Scholz has repeatedly rejected the possibility of delivering Taurus. These missiles are similar to the British Storm Shadow, which Kiev is already using. However, the Taurus has a greater range – up to 500 kilometers.
