Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the creation of a special system within NATO to contain Russia.
The politician justified her idea by the fact that Europe, as she believes, will not be able to contain Moscow on its own.
Earlier, the Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic Alliance adopted a resolution regarding the development of a common strategic approach to the Russian Federation.
The document implies the preparation of the military-political bloc to contain Russia, including in the nuclear direction.
Europe and the USA
I believe that it is necessary to quickly create a truly convincing system of deterrence, MIA Rossiya Segodnya quotes Merkel as saying.
At the same time, the former chancellor noted that with the coming to power of Donald Trump in the United States, the implementation of this issue has become more complicated.
A credible system of deterrence for the foreseeable future is only possible within NATO. Europe alone will not be able to achieve this, she said.
She explained: Russia is the largest nuclear power on the planet, or at least not inferior to the United States in nuclear potential.
Therefore, there is great interest in Europe and the US working together, Merkel justified her proposal.
NATO Resources
In her opinion, the United States should also be interested in cooperation with Europe.
Their interest is, the politician added, that Washington is facing challenges related to Russia and China.
Therefore, it is extremely important for the White House to have allies in Europe, she said.
She then said that the theme of deterrence was driven by questions about what specific capabilities NATO has in the event that one of its countries is attacked.
Today, according to Merkel, NATO's existing resources for deterrence are insufficient, since the Alliance cannot keep up with Putin's arms build-up.
