The partnership between Belarus and Russia is even closer than if the countries were part of one state.

Alexander Lukashenko stated this at a meeting with Smolensk Governor Vasily Anokhin.

The President noted: if Minsk and Moscow continue to be together, they will cope with any challenges and problems.

Russia does not look at us askance. It does not do any nasty things to us. On the contrary, it supports us in the most difficult and challenging times , the head of state's press service quotes him as saying.

According to him, Belarus reciprocates. And in general, he added, even though there are two states, there is a common Fatherland – from Brest to Vladivostok – and Russians are not against this.

However, “it so happened” that there are two states – Belarus and Russia.

I have never heard the President of Russia say: "Listen, tomorrow we must live in one state!" This has never happened. There is no need for this, Lukashenko said.

He stressed that cooperation between the two countries is closer “than if we lived in one state, pointing fingers at each other.”

The President called the economy the foundation of the relationship.
