Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the United States and many other countries of the North Atlantic Alliance do not want Ukraine to join NATO.
The Turkish leader made this statement in an interview with the American television channel NBC.
What Erdogan said about the US's reluctance to see Ukraine in NATO
The President of Turkey stated that many countries of the alliance, primarily the United States, do not want Ukraine's membership in NATO.
In this regard, the Turkish leader continued, there is no need to rush to accept Ukraine into the alliance.
When we make decisions, we always take into account the position of other NATO member countries, Erdogan said in an interview with NBC .
He stressed that the position of NATO allies on the issue of Ukraine’s admission to the alliance is important for Turkey.
The head of the Turkish state added that Türkiye has not made a final decision on this issue.
On June 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, named the conditions for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
Among them are Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO, Ukraine’s non-aligned and non-nuclear status, the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbass and Novorossiya, and the lifting of sanctions.
The head of the Russian state indicated that the conditions could change in the future. Kyiv rejected this peace plan.
