A new contract is needed to continue gas supplies from Russia to Europe via Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this in an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin.

The Russian President noted that Russia has never refused to supply gas to Europe, including through Ukraine.
However, to continue deliveries, according to Putin, a new contract is needed.
The contract ends at the end of this year, in December, the head of the Russian state specified.
And the Russian president noted that it was necessary to start booking capacity back in July.
He stated that the Ukrainian side is not taking steps to extend the contract.
Moreover, Putin continued, Kyiv recently once again stated that it does not plan to conclude a new contract.
This means that this route is being closed, Putin summed up.
In May 2022, Ukraine stopped gas transit through the Sokhranivka gas metering station, citing the fact that it was controlled by the Russian military.
There is only one route left for gas transit to Europe – the Sudzha gas station in the Kursk region. Gazprom stated that transferring all volumes to this station is technologically impossible.
According to the current contract, which expires at the end of the year, the daily pumping volume is 109.6 million cubic meters.
