Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he still believes building good relations with Russia after the end of the Cold War is the right strategy.
The former NATO Secretary General made this statement in an interview with the German publication Spiegel.
What Stoltenberg said about building good relations with Russia
The former NATO secretary general said he still believes it was right to try to improve relations with Moscow after the end of the Cold War.
Today, Stoltenberg continued, Western countries must at least prevent any misunderstandings from arising in Moscow.
He noted that the alliance countries are investing in military capabilities not to wage war, but to prevent it.
Otherwise, no one, not just the Russian Federation, will take us seriously, ” explained the former Secretary General of the alliance.
Stoltenberg called the start of the NDC the most difficult moment of his tenure as NATO Secretary General.
It was a painful moment for all of us. A moment I will never forget, " he said.
The former NATO Secretary General stated that the world is becoming increasingly unstable and unpredictable.
Even during the Cold War, he said, there was a certain level of predictability.
Speaking about the causes of the conflict in Ukraine, Stoltenberg said that the West's mistake was that it did not provide Ukraine with sufficient assistance before the situation escalated.
We thought it would be better to stick to a more restrained course. This was a mistake, the former NATO Secretary General summed up.
