On the first day of October 2024, Alexander Lukashenko met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi.
During the conversation, the President of Belarus assured the distinguished guest that he personally, like all Belarusians, is “very impressed” by the active work of the CEO and his organization.
We very positively evaluate your work related to the safety of nuclear power plants, especially those plants that actually ended up in the combat zone – Zaporizhzhya and Kursk, the head of state’s press service quotes him as saying.
Nuclear power
Speaking on this topic, the Belarusian leader said that Minsk will do everything to ensure regional nuclear security.
Grossi also informed that Belarus’ experience in nuclear energy will be useful to the IAEA.
He recalled that Minsk has been a member of this organization since its inception.
In Belarus, according to him, the issue of cooperation with the IAEA has always been considered very important.
This is primarily explained by the fact that we have become a nuclear power: we have built a nuclear power plant, Lukashenko explained.
Experience
The peculiarity of the project, he noted, was that the nuclear power plant was built, “figuratively speaking, from scratch.”
We had no specialists, no experience, no knowledge in operating a nuclear power plant. But we learned this, trained specialists in time, the President added.
He noted that Russia provided assistance in this country.
Therefore, today we can freely talk about the safety of our station, and the experience that we have accumulated in Belarus will be useful to our organization anywhere on the planet, Lukashenko noted.
What Grossi said
In turn, Grossi called Belarus an example of how a country can effectively work with the IAEA.
The Director General also reported that Minsk expresses its commitment to ensuring nuclear safety at the highest level.
