The Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the statement by Taiwan's head of administration Lai Qingde that China should take away land in the Far East from Russia.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Lai Qingde is not authorized to speak on behalf of China.

Zakharova's statement was published on the website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

How Zakharova responded to Lai Qingde

The representative of the Russian diplomatic department recalled that in 2001, Russia and China signed the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, recording in it a mutual renunciation of territorial claims.

Russia and China put the final point in the border regulation in 2004, having concluded the Additional Agreement on the Russian-Chinese border on its eastern part. This position is confirmed by other joint documents.

Zakharova emphasized that Moscow consistently adheres to the one-China principle and believes that the only legitimate government of China is the government of the PRC.

Therefore, according to the diplomat, Lai Qingde has no authority to make any statements on behalf of China.

The Russian Foreign Ministry representative added that Moscow is not interested in the opinions of marginal politicians who are overcome with revanchism.

So Lai, incited to separatism by the Americans, can “bark” as much as he wants, Zakharova said.

She advised Lai Qingde to focus on resolving Taiwan's economic problems and to take a constructive approach to Beijing's proposals for peaceful unification with mainland China.

We are confident that our friends in Beijing take the same position, ” the diplomat added.
