At first glance, it may seem that the love that dogs have for bones is a matter of course.
But in fact, this opinion is only partly true. Let's look into this issue in more detail.
Why Chewing Bones Is Good for Dogs
The benefit of chewing bones for dogs is that this process stimulates the production of saliva, and also serves as a kind of prevention of plaque and gum disease.
Another advantage of this type of pastime is that as a result the animal will scratch and lick its paws less.
What rules should a dog owner follow?
If you want your dog to get only the benefits of chewing bones, strictly adhere to the following rules.
Don't worry: there are only three recommendations, and they are quite simple.
1. So, you can only offer your dog large raw bones to chew.
You shouldn't treat your pet with a cooked product, since this option is much softer and will be easier for the dog to chew.
2. While your pet is chewing the bone, you should be nearby and make sure that he does not chew the bone into small pieces.
The danger of fragments is that they often get stuck in the esophagus or upper respiratory tract.
This same reason explains the ban on dogs eating small chicken bones.
3. And finally, after 10-10 minutes, the treat must be taken away from the dog.
Don't throw the bone away - you can gnaw on it again (or even several times) if you store it in the refrigerator. It can easily last 3-4 days here.
What can replace bones?
If you, or more specifically your dog, need an alternative, look into special hard treats: rawhide bones, meat sticks or dried pig ears.
