Probably every dog owner has experienced the inconvenience of having their dog bark at strangers passing by for no reason.
We will hasten to tell you how to help your pet be calmer towards strangers.
Socialization
The first thing an owner should do is to expand their pet's social experience. Introduce him to different people in a safe environment. Let your friends, whom the dog has not yet met, visit you, taking dog treats with them.
Team "Quiet"
To teach your pet to stop barking on command, when your dog barks, say "Quiet" in a calm voice. As soon as your dog stops barking (even for a second), give him his favorite treat. Gradually increase the amount of time he is quiet before rewarding him.
Positive associations
Every time your dog greets a stranger in silence, reward him with praise and a treat. This will help associate the appearance of strangers with positive emotions.
Control of the environment
If your pet barks at passers-by through the window, restrict its access using curtains or special films that will hide everything that is happening outside from the dog’s view.
But you shouldn’t use punishment – such behavior will only make the problem worse: your pet will become even more anxious and afraid of strangers.
If you can’t cope on your own, contact a dog trainer or zoopsychologist.
