Why Cats Are Harder to Train Than Dogs: The Answer Is in Motivation

For some reason, it is generally accepted that dogs are smarter animals than cats. Perhaps the reason is that dogs are much easier to train.

We suggest figuring out what causes problems with cat training.

You might think that the purring cat does not feel the desire to carry out commands because of its freedom-loving nature, but in fact this is not so.

The key point in training animals is their motivation to perform certain actions, and the best motivation is considered to be food, which is only confirmed by examples from the wild, when animals are ready to spend their last strength to get food for themselves.

In their natural environment, so to speak, dogs and cats obtain food by hunting.

Only the hunting technique of these animals is different - this is the reason why the speed of their training varies significantly.

Thus, dogs are able to pursue prey for several kilometers until they are completely exhausted. As a result, the tricks that the owner requires the dog to perform do not seem difficult to the dog.

But cats prefer to get their prey differently: they conserve energy and do not want to waste it. Most often, cats wait in a shelter and grab a mouse or a bird with one throw.

Their "victims" are usually small animals - they do not provide too much energy, which is why pets try not to spend more energy on hunting than they can get from food.

Thus, when a person tries to teach a cat commands, it is not motivated enough: the animal simply does not understand why it should continue to hunt and get so little food, while spending a lot of energy.
