Why Some Dogs Have Different Colored Eyes: The Reason Has Been Found

Some dogs (albeit a small number) have eyes of different colors – just like people, cats, and some horses.

This “phenomenon” is called “heterochromia” and is usually a genetic disorder, but there are also cases where heterochromia is caused by a disease.

When a dog injures his eye or develops an eye disease, sometimes his eyes may change color, although this is actually very rare.

The cause of the condition is a complete or partial absence of melanin in one of the eyes.

Lack of pigment results in the eye being "colored" blue or bluish-white.

There is no need to worry about the fact that you got such an unusual dog, but if changes have occurred over time, it makes sense to see a veterinarian.

What is noteworthy is that heterochromia can be observed in dogs of any breed, but there are still several breeds among whose representatives this “phenomenon” is observed more often than in others.

These include Australian Shepherds, Great Danes, Huskies, Leopard Dogs and Dalmatians.

By the way, if we talk about the latter, then in Dalmatians blue eyes (or eyes) are often a sign that the dog cannot hear.
