You may have noticed your dog suddenly shaking his head and scratching his ears.
There are several possible explanations for this behavior.
Why does a dog shake its head and scratch its ears?
Sometimes a dog may simply shake its head. If a dog scratches its ears with its paws, most likely this behavior is due to the fact that liquid or a foreign object accidentally got into the hearing organ.
Head shaking in dogs is usually observed after bathing.
In more “advanced” cases, the animal not only makes head movements, but also intensively scratches its ears - sometimes so much so that damage cannot be avoided.
In this situation, the explanation may be serious illnesses – perhaps even otitis or scabies.
What should the owner do?
First, do a self-examination to make sure there is no foreign body in the ear. If one is found, go to the vet immediately.
If your pet whines when you scratch it and pus flows out of its ear, this may indicate otitis - as in the first case, the dog needs medical attention.
In general, if you do not want to doubt the well-being of your dog and ease the animal's suffering, head to the veterinary clinic.
