Don't give fruits and don't buy ready-made food: how to feed rabbits correctly

Proper nutrition is the key to your rabbit's good health and longevity, as most diseases in these animals are caused by improper feeding.

Remember that rabbits are herbivores and their diet should consist exclusively of raw plant foods.

What is the correct diet for a rabbit?

A rabbit's diet should consist of:

  • Hay: alfalfa hay is recommended until 6 months of age, then switch to timothy or orchard grass hay.
  • Succulent feed: lettuce and dandelion leaves, sedge, dill, parsley, as well as carrot and beet tops.
  • Vegetables: carrots, zucchini, cucumber and beetroot.

What you shouldn't give to a rabbit

Fruits should not be in the rabbit's diet, as they can cause a refusal of hay. Pieces of sweets, moreover, can get stuck between the teeth and cause caries.

Ready-made feeds are not used in feeding rabbits, as most of them contain grains and sweets, which can spoil their eating habits and cause intestinal problems. If you still want to add feed, choose only grass pellets without additives. For an adult rabbit, 1 tablespoon per day is enough.

Mandatory supplement

In rabbits, as in cats, hair accumulates in the gastrointestinal tract and forms hairballs.

Since rabbits do not vomit, the hair remains inside and intestinal obstruction may occur. To prevent this problem, include cat hair removal paste in your pet's diet.
