It often happens that cat owners really want, but cannot afford, a parrot, or, conversely, canary owners deny themselves the pleasure of acquiring a purring pet.
There is only one reason – the fear that such creatures, seemingly from diametrically opposed worlds, cannot be made friends.
Indeed, if we remember that a cat is, first and foremost, a predator, and a bird is prey, doubts about their “getting along” with each other become absolutely understandable.
However, do not forget that a domestic cat has gone through a rather long path of development, which has changed its behavior in many ways.
This means that cats can be trained to do things that would be completely unacceptable in the wild – for example, to befriend birds.
Work on the relationship between a cat and a parrot or any other feathered pet should be built “from the opposite”, that is, by reducing interest.
The first step is to review all cat toys, from which it is necessary to exclude all products with feathers. This way, your furry pet will forget about the association of "feathers" equals "prey".
To prevent a flying bird from provoking the awakening of the hunting instinct, be sure to play active games with your cat so that the latter uses up all its energy. Moreover, it is recommended to have fun in the presence of the bird.
Noticed that Barsik is trying to catch Kesha? No need to react emotionally – show all the calmness you have in reserve and switch the cat to the game. In extreme cases – separate the pets into different rooms.
But the lack of reaction to the bird, on the contrary, should be reinforced with all your might, and it is better to do this with the help of a treat.
But you still shouldn't leave your cat alone with the bird. When leaving home, make sure the parrot is securely locked in the cage and the cat can't get to it. Be patient, and everything will work out.
