9 Reasons Why Your Cat Lies Under Your Bed

When there are guests in the house, cats usually hide under the bed because it is dark, quiet and too small for a person to fit there.

In other words, it is the perfect place for a cat when it feels insecure. However, there are other reasons why cats choose the place under the bed.

Anxiety

When cats are stressed, they tend to find small, dark places to hide. They also like to climb as high as possible, but when they are especially scared, they hide under cabinets and furniture.
This is especially true if something has disrupted their normal routine. Changes or anything perceived as a threat may cause the cat to hide from trouble.

Guests

If your cat is shy around new people, she may hide until they leave. People bring new smells (including other animals) and sounds that may cause your cat to hide under the bed.

Daytime sleep

Most cats sleep on average 15 to 16 hours a day, and some can even sleep up to 20 hours a day, so they need a nice, comfortable place. One such place could be under the bed - it's cozy and dark, and it ensures that the cat is left alone.

Temperature

The space under the bed can be one of the coolest places in the summer, especially during heat waves, and one of the warmest during the cold winter months.

Injury or health problems

When an animal is sick or in pain, it tries to hide the problem for as long as possible. If the cat does show signs of discomfort or illness, it is probably quite serious.

Also, in such circumstances, the pet may hide, as it instinctively seeks to protect itself. Although cats are mainly predators, they are also prey, so they do not want to show that they are vulnerable. Under the bed, they will feel safe to recuperate.

Changes in daily routine

A cat will also hide under the bed because something is changing in the home. Maybe a person is moving or going on a trip, which entails packing. Maybe a new person has moved into the house. Even something as simple as a change in the layout of a room can cause some cats to hide.

Cats like things to stay the same and don't like changes in routine. Adding something new, like furniture, introduces new and unfamiliar smells that may cause the cat to hide in a familiar place.

Pregnancy

If your cat is pregnant, she may hide under the bed. This usually happens about a day or two before she goes into labor.

A pregnant cat will look for a safe and quiet place to give birth to her kittens. This place can be a closet, the space behind the sofa or under the bed.

Safe Haven

Sudden loud noises, such as thunder or fireworks, may cause a cat to hide under the bed. If there are small children in the house, cats may avoid them by hiding under the bed.

New pet

The arrival of a new pet can also cause a cat to hide. Whether it is an overly boisterous dog or another cat, the current pet will seek refuge.
