Cats usually don't like water, but on the other hand, they don't mind basking in the sink or playing with their paws in a bowl of water. Why do cats behave so illogically?

Experts have long identified the reason for this behavioral feature of furry friends.

Checking the water level

Many cat owners know very well that under no circumstances should you trim a cat's whiskers. The fact is that cats' whiskers help them navigate in space.

Using its whiskers, for example, a cat could check the water level in a bowl, but then the animal would have to wet its whiskers.

Exercise caution

When a cat starts drinking from a bowl, it cannot see what is happening behind its back.

Often, the situation when the cat is not the only animal in the house makes the cat, due to natural instincts, not allow itself to be in a vulnerable position. Therefore, before starting to drink, the cat prefers to check what will happen if it starts to interact with water.

Inconvenient placement of the bowl

If a cat is uncomfortable drinking from a bowl, it may show its displeasure by splashing water out of the bowl with its paws. Or the animal may use its paws to try to drink or move an inconveniently located bowl.

Cats also tend to behave like predators, not used to drinking water near the place where they dined. That is, not all cats like it when a bowl of water is next to a bowl of food.

It's just a game

It is believed that many playful cats are willing to play with water. If the cat is playful by nature, this may well be the correct explanation for its love of dipping its paws in water.

The instinct is not to drink water from stagnant bodies of water

Again about instincts. Wild cats will never drink from stagnant water bodies. The fact is that dangerous microorganisms multiply well in such conditions.

Evolution has long taught felines to drink from rivers where you can see that the water is flowing. Therefore, a domestic cat cannot resist moving the water in its bowl to drink.
