Researchers from Hungary have concluded that dogs and humans process speech in roughly the same way.
This was reported by employees of the University of Budapest.
The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Nature.
To find out how dogs perceive speech, scientists monitored the animals' brain activity.
As a result, it turned out that speech perception cannot be called an ability exclusively of the human intellect.
Dogs were also able to “catch” articulate speech from people and understand the meaning of the words spoken.
Pets, like humans, perceive speech hierarchically. This means that the subcortical layers are “responsible” for interpreting intonation.
In this case, the meaning of words is “processed” in the cerebral cortex.
However, scientists emphasize that the results of the study do not prove that the dog's brain is adapted to process speech sounds.
Nevertheless, it is possible to draw a conclusion about the similarity of the structure of the brain of a dog and a human in terms of the action described above.
