The most plausible version of the origin of this superstition is considered to be the version associated with the war of 1812 and the Cossacks.
Once in the capital of France, they did not ignore the local drinking establishments.
And since waiters in Parisian taverns, when writing out the bill, counted the bottles on the table, one of the Cossacks came up with the idea of hiding empty containers under the table in order to pay less.
Over time, Parisian waiters realized the Cossacks' trick and began to take away empty bottles.
However, the practical tradition of not leaving empty containers on the table has taken hold and has survived to this day.
