Scientists have finally found the answer to the question of why people like to listen to sad music.
To find out, researchers from the University of New South Wales in Australia conducted an experiment involving 50 people.
The subjects were asked to choose any piece of music that made them feel sad.
Afterwards, the participants in the experiment were asked whether they could abstract themselves from the feeling of sadness while listening to the compositions, and most answered positively.
At the end of the study, the group was asked whether their perception of music without the sadness component had changed.
Most participants (82%) reported decreased listening enjoyment under these conditions.
Professor Emery Schubert, lead author of the study, explained the phenomenon by saying that people sometimes benefit from listening to sad music.
It helps you experience strong emotions in a safe environment and better understand your feelings.
