Sharks often seem like ruthless killers to us, who sometimes become their victims, but scientists do not share this point of view.
According to researchers, sharks attack people because they confuse them with their natural prey – seals.
To verify this, Australian experts tried on “shark vision”.
The study used footage of sea lions and seals swimming in zoo pools (viewed from the bottom), as well as footage of people paddling while on surfboards.
Both types of videos were analyzed using a special system.
It was pre-converted to suit shark vision, meaning the program imitated the color, viewing angle, and anatomical features of the fish.
As a result, it was possible to establish that there is no particular difference in the movements of people on boards and swimming seals.
Scientists believe that sharks simply confuse an oval surfboard with the body of a seal, and human arms and legs with the limbs of an animal.
