The Russian language is deservedly considered one of the most difficult in the world.
And it's not just the complicated grammar. Some Russian words simply drive foreigners crazy.
What Russian words do foreigners not understand?
As sport24.ru reports, the Russian language drives foreigners crazy because of enantiosemy (intra-word antonymy, counteronymy) – the ability of a word to denote concepts that are opposite in meaning.
There are many such words in Russian. Here are some examples.
To quit is to start something and to finish it (to start a relationship, to quit drinking).
Listen - and hear, and then ignore.
To cure means to both cure and worsen the patient’s condition due to the treatment.
Look through and study, and not notice anything.
It is worth noting that enantiosemy is characteristic not only of the Russian language; it is also inherent in German and English.
