Russian oceanographer Sergei Mukhametov dispelled some popular myths about sharks.
It is not hard to guess that the comment is a reaction to the news about the tragic death of a Russian tourist on the beach in Hurghada. The specialist told how sharks attack their victims in reality.
The expert noted that shark attacks are rare and that there is a much greater chance of dying from a mosquito bite than dying in the jaws of a sea predator.
Myths
The most popular misconception is the famous shark fin, which supposedly appears on the surface of the water before an attack.
This only happens in the movies, Mukhametov assures. In real life, predators attack from the depths or from the side.
Risk of attack
In Russian resort areas, it is almost impossible to die from a shark attack, the specialist assures. In this case, mosquitoes, which carry dangerous diseases, pose a much greater threat.
From hippopotamus, for example, from 500 to three thousand people per year. Even harmless deer - more than a hundred people die from them per year due to collisions with cars. The most dangerous animal, probably, is the mosquito, which carries diseases. There are generally up to a million human victims per year, - Sergey Mukhametov, senior lecturer of the oceanology department of the geography faculty of Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov, told MIA "Russia Today " in an interview.
As for sharks, scientists estimate that no more than ten people die from their attacks every year.
