Fraudsters, under the pretext of investing in gold, lured 46,000 rubles from a resident of Polotsk.

This was reported by the press service of the Department of Internal Affairs of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee.

How the scammers operated

As reported by the Internal Affairs Directorate , a 48-year-old resident of Polotsk saw an advertisement on the social network Instagram (banned in the Russian Federation, owned by the Meta company, which is recognized as extremist in Russia) offering to invest in gold.

Having become interested, the Polotsk resident followed the link and filled out the form.

After this, his curator contacted him on the WhatsApp messenger (banned in the Russian Federation, owned by the Meta company, which is recognized as extremist in Russia).

Having explained the investment terms, he volunteered to carry out all transactions himself.

The man agreed. A personal account was created for him on the fake website of the Internet exchange. In a month, the Polotsk resident transferred more than 30,000 rubles.

The curator informed the man every day how much he had managed to earn. His personal account showed a profit of 70,000 rubles.

To withdraw the funds, the Polotsk resident needed to transfer another 4,000 dollars.

When the man transferred 13,000 rubles, he was asked to top up the account again.

The Polotsk resident realized that he had become a victim of fraud and contacted the police. In total, he lost about 46,000 rubles.
