There has been a new telecommunications cable break between Sweden and Finland.
It is believed that the internet cable is damaged. At least, this is the information published by the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.
In turn, the TASS agency , having familiarized itself with the publications of Western media, writes that the collapse took place last night in Finland (on land).
Extensive failure
Local law enforcement officers suspected sabotage and notified the Swedish authorities.
According to Helsingin Sanomat, there has been a major outage in the network of the fibre optic company Global Connect in Finland, but it is not yet clear whether it is the result of a cable break.
The company itself is talking about “isolated outages” in its fiber-optic networks, caused by damage to communications in two places.
Finnish Transport Minister Lulu Ranne said an investigation was underway into the cable break.
Sabotage is suspected
Sweden's Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin said Stockholm was closely monitoring developments surrounding the incident.
He noted that the Finnish police suspect sabotage, while Sweden is taking the incident seriously.
The Finnish police are investigating the incident and, given the circumstances, sabotage is suspected. The government is in contact with the responsible authorities and is monitoring the developments, the head of the department said.
Repair works
Global Connect said repairs were currently underway at the site of one of the cable breaks.
According to the company, the majority of affected clients – 6,000 individuals and about 100 legal entities – are already using the Internet again.
Earlier, on November 17-18, two cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea (one connects Finland with Germany, the other connects Sweden with Lithuania).
At the end of last week, as reported by the media, the damage was repaired.
