How Zurabishvili Refused to Resign
The President of Georgia said that she will not leave her post because the parliament is illegitimate.
An illegitimate parliament will not be able to elect a new president. My mandate continues until there is a legitimately elected parliament, the head of the Georgian state explained.
Zurabishvili's term expires in mid-December. Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on October 26.
The ruling Georgian Dream party received 53.93% of the votes. Four opposition parties also entered parliament, receiving a total of 37.78%.
Their representatives said they did not recognize the election results and led their supporters in protests that lasted for several weeks.
On Thursday, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a decision to postpone the start of negotiations on the country's accession to the European Union until the end of 2028, and protests resumed.
On the night of November 30, they escalated into clashes with the police. The State Security Service of Georgia announced an attempt to violently seize power.
