French government resigns after PM faces no-confidence vote

The majority of French MPs have voted to pass a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Michel Barnier.

For such an initiative to be adopted, at least 288 votes were needed. Many more voted in favor – 331 parliamentarians.

This means that Barnier is forced to leave his post and the government will resign through a vote of no confidence for the first time in 62 years.

The event was reported by MIA "Russia Today", noting that the reason for the incident was the issue of social insurance.

The fact is that on December 2, the Prime Minister spoke at a meeting of the National Assembly, where the draft law on the social security budget for 2025 was being considered.

Barnier decided not to wait for the deputies to vote. He declared that he would apply Article 49.3 of the Constitution, which allows the document to be passed bypassing their decision.

The left-wing party "France Insubordinate" has put forward a vote of no confidence in Barnier, an initiative supported by Marine Le Pen's "National Rally".
