Entire town evacuated in Iceland as volcano erupts

A volcano is raging again in Iceland. The town of Grindavik has been evacuated due to a powerful eruption.

In addition, evacuations were carried out at the Blue Lagoon geothermal resort, which is popular with tourists.

As reported by MIA "Russia Today" with reference to the television company RUV, the eruption began on the night of November 21 on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Earlier, the local meteorological service reported the volcano's fury.

In turn, the Chief of Police of Sydurnes announced that an evacuation was taking place in the city of Grindavik.

Due to the powerful volcanic eruption, the country's civil defense service declared a state of emergency.

According to the television company, the named city, as well as the Blue Lagoon resort, were completely evacuated.

The last employees of the Svartsengi power plant left the area shortly before midnight (03:00 Belarusian time), the statement said.

Blue Lagoon officials said the resort would be closed on Thursday, November 21.

And the staff of Keflavik International Airport reported that the airport is still operating as usual.

Iceland's meteorological service says the volcanic rift is 3km long, but has stopped widening, according to its data.
