There are currently no nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan.
But it is possible that in the future such an enterprise will appear in the Central Asian country.
But it is important to emphasize: this will happen if the citizens of this republic vote in favor of the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.
The corresponding referendum is taking place in the country today, October 6, TASS reports.
Progress of the referendum in Kazakhstan
At four o'clock local time (it was 2:00 p.m. in Belarus at that time), turnout was more than 57 percent.
This indicator already allows us to recognize the referendum as having taken place.
By that time, just over 7 million citizens of the Central Asian republic had cast their votes. This is 57.68 percent of the total number of people eligible to vote.
Such data were made public by the Central Referendum Commission, TASS reports.
Among the regions, the leader in turnout is the Turkestan region (70 percent).
The lowest rate was recorded in Almaty (just over 20.5 percent).
As for the Almaty region, where the nuclear power plant will be built (if, of course, the Kazakhs support such a decision), the turnout at 16:00 (local time) was 64.09 percent.
