In South Korea, the president is accused of treason, and the opposition wants to launch impeachment proceedings.

It is only necessary to get 18 votes from the deputies of the ruling party "Civil Force" to begin the process of removing the head of state from power.

This was reported by MIA "Russia Today" with reference to the Yonhap agency.

Accusation of the opposition

Earlier, the Democratic United Party officially announced plans to accuse President Yoon Seok-yeol of the coup.

The party wants to bring a similar charge against Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun and Interior and Security Minister Lee Sang Min.

The opposition also intends to organize impeachment against the president.

In this regard, members of the above-mentioned party, as well as members of the Homeland Renewal Party, the Progressive Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Social Democratic Party, formed a coalition called the "Deputy Alliance for the Impeachment of Yun Seok-yeol."

Under South Korean law, after an impeachment bill is submitted, parliament must secretly vote on its adoption within 24 to 72 hours of the document's submission.

Need 18 votes

According to the country's Constitution, a proposal for impeachment must be supported by more than 50% of deputies, and for it to be adopted, at least 2/3 of the deputies (200 out of 300) must vote in favor.

Earlier, the parliament adopted a proposal to lift martial law – all 190 deputies present voted in favor.

Moreover, 18 representatives of the ruling party also supported the proposal.

If the same 18 deputies go over to the opposition side on the impeachment issue, President Yun Seok-yeol will have no chance of avoiding the procedure, Yonhap notes.

But, as the publication goes on to say, it is not yet clear whether these deputies who supported the lifting of martial law are ready to speak out in favor of impeachment.
