It is not recommended to rush to cover the grapes for the winter. They say that the vine can withstand frosts down to -15 degrees.
Therefore, experienced gardeners do not cover grapes before November. But some nuances in this matter still exist.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist, landscape designer, told how to properly cover grapes for the winter.
Deadlines
You can start work in November and December. But it is important to do it before the snowfalls begin.
What to cover with
Spruce branches are especially popular in gardening circles.
The material is accessible, retains its shape well, and does not interfere with oxygen access.
You can use sawdust, which you can use to cover the vines in a layer of up to 20 cm, and then cover with sheets of slate or other material to prevent them from getting wet.
You can also use non-woven materials such as spunbond or its analogues.
Other methods of covering, such as burying the vine in soil or covering it with film, lead to the vine rotting, or buds awakening under the cover, which die off in severe frosts.
An important point
But the most important thing is the condition of the soil before the main work is carried out.
The vine should not be placed on damp soil, otherwise the shoots may begin to rot.
