Gardeners and vegetable growers hate empty space. And if there is something else they can plant somewhere, they will definitely do it.
However, it is important to remember that not all cultivated plants will be happy with new neighbors.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist agronomist and landscape designer, told what can and cannot be planted next to currants.
Examples of good neighborliness
1. Among vegetable crops, you should pay attention to onions and garlic.
They do their best to protect berry bushes from pest attacks and certain diseases.
But you shouldn’t rely entirely on the miraculous power of plants, so be sure to take preventative measures.
Spinach and basil get along well with currants. In any case, there will be no harm.
2. Of the berry bushes, it is permissible to plant strawberries.
Of the larger shrubs, jostaberry and honeysuckle are suitable neighbors.
They will like the soil composition, as well as a similar watering regime.
Bad examples
Planting currants next to raspberries or vice versa has a negative effect on currants.
Due to their relationship, it is not recommended to grow gooseberries together with currants – beware of common pests.
Another bad idea is to plant black and white currants together.
The bushes will compete for nutrients, which will affect the yield.
