Turfing tree trunk circles: what can be planted here

Summer residents know several ways to maintain the tree trunk circle. Turfing is one of them.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh suggested examining this technique in more detail.

What can be planted in the tree trunk circle

Some gardeners sow the space under the trees using seeds of perennial meadow grasses.

In this case, it is worth considering that herbaceous plants take away some of the nutrition from trees. This can negatively affect their development, especially when it comes to young seedlings.

For this reason, you will have to apply fertilizers more often, as well as mow the area and treat it for pests.

Please note: do not sow lawn grass or create a flower bed in the tree trunk circle for the first 2-3 years after planting the tree - the plants will compete for nutrition.

As an alternative to sodding, you can consider sowing green manure in the tree trunk circle.

Green manure plants improve the quality of the soil and its structure. They serve as protection against weathering, prevent weeds from growing and repel pests.

In addition, green manure (in particular, lupine, phacelia, sweet clover and alfalfa) are quite decorative, which is why with their presence the garden begins to look more well-groomed. Moreover, after mowing, green manure can be used as mulch.

In spring, green crops and flowers with a superficial root system can be grown in the trunk circles of adult trees - these include marigolds, daisies, nasturtiums, calendulas, etc. They will not only decorate the area, but also serve as protection for trees from diseases and pests.

For reference

A tree is a life form of woody plants with a single, clearly expressed, perennial, woody to varying degrees, preserved throughout life, branched (except for palms) main axis - the trunk.
