How to properly prepare a bed for cucumbers: on such soil, no additional fertilizer is needed

To get an excellent cucumber harvest from your plot, you don’t have to be a professional agronomist.

It is enough to know a few key rules, and you can consider that the job is in the bag.

For example, it is important to properly prepare the beds in which you plan to grow the crop.

Let's start with the fact that cucumbers grow best in areas where early cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, onions, peas, potatoes or greens previously lived.

Conversely, if late root crops or white cabbage were “sitting” in the beds, they are not suitable for growing cucumbers.

It is also not recommended to plant cucumbers after pumpkin crops – at least for a couple of years.

Preparing the area for cucumbers should be done in advance, preferably in the fall.

Start by cleaning up: collect and burn all plant debris to protect future plantings from diseases and pests.

The next step is to apply organic fertilizers. The rates depend on the fertility of the soil, but on average 40 to 60 tons per hectare are recommended. The next thing to do is to dig the soil to a depth of about 20 cm.

In the spring, before planting cucumbers, you need to carry out several more important procedures. First, level the soil surface and remove all weeds.

After this, add mineral fertilizers: phosphorus, potassium or nitrogen – at a rate of up to 30 g per square meter.

Then dig the soil again to the same depth so that the fertilizer is evenly distributed throughout the area.
