If you live near a river or lake, don't miss the chance to take advantage of valuable fertilizer that you can get for free.

We are talking about river silt – it turns out that it can significantly increase the yield of crops growing in the garden.

Cucumbers and squash especially love silt. It is best if it is lake silt, river silt is somewhat inferior in quality, and marsh silt is the last in this trio.

Please note: you cannot go to industrial wastewater treatment plants for fertilizer – vegetables grown using such fertilizer are unlikely to be safe for your health.

What are the benefits of silt?

Silt is used to reduce soil acidity and increase its phosphorus and nitrogen content.

It has a beneficial effect on the amount of humus contained in the soil, and also retains moisture in the soil and increases the resistance of plants to adverse environmental factors.

Another advantage of this type of feeding is that the silt does not burn the roots. It is impossible to overfeed zucchini or cucumbers with it.

How to use sludge in the garden

The first step is, of course, to collect the sludge. After that comes the drying stage in the open air – this procedure is necessary in order to reduce the acid content.

Finally, the sludge is spread over the garden. Near the plants, it can be additionally placed using a hoe or rake.

For reference

Silt is a water-saturated, uncompacted material that forms at the bottom of water bodies.
