In the fall, every rose grower must take several important steps to prepare these plants for winter.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what needs to be done to receive a reward in the form of beautiful and healthy roses in the spring.
Fertilizer
When preparing for winter, it is recommended to avoid applying fertilizers and instead take care of mulching.
Almost any organic material can be used as a shelter: leaves, bark, straw, etc.
Trimming
Pruning helps to form a beautiful crown and get rid of old, diseased and damaged branches. As a result, more light and air will penetrate into the bush.
The optimal time for pruning is the end of October or the beginning of November.
Watering
Watering rose bushes is allowed until the first frost.
Dry leaves
Before the roses go dormant, you should remove all dry leaves from the bush - otherwise, favorable conditions for rot and mold are created. Please note: leaves with signs of damage should not be added to the mulch: it is better to eliminate them in another way.
Shelter
In order to protect roses from strong winds, snowstorms and frosts, many gardeners cover the bushes with matting, after which they secure and weigh down the protective layer.
